Haruki vs. Karamazov: Contemporary Japanese Literature
under the Shadow of the Great Russian
Mitsuyoshi NUMANO -Professor, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology
Room 312, Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York Street

The lecture was attended by many students and academic staff members of East Asian
Studies, Slavic Languages and Literatures, and Comparative Literature, although it was
the busy time near the end of the semester. The lecture was so popular that the
classroom could not accommodate all of them, and thus the classroom had to be
changed. After Professor Yasunari Takada said greetings, representing the Todai-Yale
Initiative, Christopher Hill, Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures,
introduced the lecturer. The lecture was given by Professor Mitsuyoshi Numano for
one and a half hour. As the lecture topics were timely, the comparative theory of Japan
and Russia was interesting, and he was eloquent, the lecture was followed
by an active and lively question-and-answer session.
